Fine art portrait of Discobolus
Origin of Discobolus
The Discobolus or “discus thrower” is one of the most iconic artworks of classical antiquity. Originally sculpted in bronze by an Athenian man called Myron (born in the fortress-city of Eleuthera in the 5th century BC), the statue has gained fame largely through its many bronzes and marble copies made by the Romans.
Discobolus is portrayed as a bust made of old medieval plaster, representing that he will be strong even if made out of plaster. It also resonated well with the material of the original sculpture—bronze.
is a Greek sculpture completed at the start of the Classical period at around 460–450 BC. The sculpture depicts a youthful male athlete throwing the discus. The original Greek bronze is lost, but the work is known through numerous Roman copies, both full-scale ones in marble, cheaper than bronze, such as the first to be recovered, the Palombara Discobolus, and smaller scaled versions in bronze.
